Stellina smart telescope
Telescopes tend to be big, bulky and for the most part, telescopy (something you learn sitting next to our friends at Sky at Night Magazine when it’s time for them to do .That’s why we’re pretty excited to see the Star by telescope, which resembles something that landed from space more than something to look into it.
Rather than peer through a lens, the Stellina uses a smartphone app to help you track and look at the stars, and is smart enough to tell you exactly what you are staring at. If that happens to be a hazy orange sky over the city, worry not, as it uses a special light pollution filter to cut through the atmosphere. That said, weighing a tidy 7kg, it’s portable enough to lug around you if you want to take it on a hike as well.

Virtual Reality (VR) gaming has been every gamer’s fantasy since the film The Lawnmower Man came out in 1992. Thankfully, the Oculus Rift VR headset is nothing like that – it’s much better. Connected to a PC, it presents your environment in full 3D, with a 110° field of view that tracks your head movements so you can look around virtual worlds. It’s been trialled by some of the gaming industry’s leading figures, like John Carmack the creator of Doom and Quake, and has received their seal of approval.

(5) Drown forest fire in sound
Forest fire could one day be dealt with by drone that would direct loud noise at the tree below. Since sound is made up of pressure waves, it can be used to disrupt the air surrounding a fire, essentialy cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fuel. At the right frequency the fires simply dies out. As researchers at George Mason University in Virginia recently demonstrate with sonic extinguishers. Apparently bass frequencies work best.
