Zwift v. Rouvy (Augmented Reality in 2019)

Rouvy is hitting hard this winter training season with augmented reality. Here is my first quick look at Rouvy for 2019 winter season and I have to say I am massively impressed. I was able to down load the app very quickly, pair it on my ipad in seconds and get riding straight away. Very impressed. Now Zwift on the other hand I actually tried to renew my subscription, but their system timed out and could not take my money. The app took an awfully long time to connect and I got frustrated and picked up Rouvy. Glad I did too. Rouvy features lower pricing, a longer free trial and some really cool features. The AR courses are not plentiful just yet, but it’s coming. The other courses are gorgeous, but there are no other characters on screen…only the AR courses. As I said in my video THEY REALLY NEED TO NOT START THESE COURSES ON MASSIVE UPHILLS. Also, I had trouble changing the camera angle and was not sure how to mess with resistance levels, because those hills are just a little too intense for me at the moment. But it is so pretty and engaging to look at. I think they will be turning a lot of heads this winter. Can’t wait to try a race on there soon and really explore their system more in depth.

I love racing and riding bikes, so this is really about having fun. Doing these Racecast videos can be time-consuming, but mostly I like it. It’s only fun if I know someone else cares. Subscribing helps me know…thanks!

  • I like the AR better than zwift but the only thing lacking is the community or riders in the route, maybe they can solve this by reducing the number of routes or adding more bot riders to have some feeling of company while riding

  • I have been using rouvy now for 6 months and love it. I like zwift but prefer real life routes and get to ride various mountain stages around the world. Once more people start using rouvy it will certainly be a zwift stopper and more races will appear. Rouvy gets addictive, I am now an elite rider working towards the next level.

  • I been using rouvy since last year and to me looks great because i can share with other people (2 more) the account. so i pay like $80 dollars for 6 months, zwift doenst have that option it would be great…

  • Thanks for the breakdown. I too enjoyed the augmented reality, but unlike you, I enjoyed a ride with less or no people. Disappointing for me is the lack of MAC interface. But so much better than Zwift in many ways.

  • good evening
    I just saw the video
I do not understand English very well, but if I understand, we see our 3D simulated bike on real video tracks ?
I have a bkool smart pro 2, on the bike I have a cadence sensor and speed sensor garmin, so it would be possible for me to use rouvy with the hardware I just mentioned
    if so, how to test?
    cordially

  • I downloaded Rouvy too and it is amazing. My duds and I use it all the time we plan races just for fun or training.

  • Could you tell more about training? I am using Zwift since January now and will only use training programs. Thanks for any answers!

  • Thanks Brian. I absolutely can’t stand the “Atari” graphics of Zwift, and getting motivated on the trainer is hard enough, but I’m liking what I see with Rouvy and Augmented Reality. I’m intrigued after watching your video. Thanks!

  • Currently trying Zwift with Wahoo Kickr. Using Windows PC and monitor. Not really liking it. I pick a route, and a length of time, and every single time it ignores my selection. I just want to ride the route, I don't want to run a tablet/phone at the same time to actually pick the turns to go on the route I already picked. Going to try Rouvy this week. Thanks for the review!

  • Did several months with Zwift. Didn't like as I'm senior and was unable to hang with most of the activities. Rouvy seems less expensive at $6/mo on one year plan. Is premium worth the additional bucks?

  • I love it ! After using Bkool in about 4 year, and Bkool are build similar to Rouvy, i am impressed. So in end of January i will swich over to Rouvy !!

  • I have been using Rouvy for 3 years, along with a few other training programs. Never done Zwift, interested in workout programs. Im torn… maybe I should give zwift a week trial and then decide.

  • Tried it and I felt more enthusiastic and entertained than zwift. Just a few more twicks and I will be a rouvist. Subscribed… nice video.

  • Hey there. Not to be a pedant, but this is not at all Augmented Reality (AR). AR is where some sort of computer generated info is created over actual reality, either with something like Google Glass or through your phone. Think Pokemon Go. This is just VR with a very old-school twist: just like the arcade games of the late 80's which used laser disks for the backgrounds and computer graphics for the main game play. Example: Firefox by Atari. AR while riding could be a disaster, though it'd be fun to watch the carnage. 😉 That said, this looks cool and I'm going to give it a shot!

  • Too much wasted time at the start of the video and not enough details for the difference. Not enough content as a percentage of time viewed.

  • Would be cool if there is a way to combine Trainerroad and Zwift or Rouvy together to run at the same time. Trainerroad looks boring as hell. Some distraction with the road would be awesome. Seems like it's the same bluetooth feed to the computer.

  • Very cool, I appreciate your videos. I just got a Kickr and just did my ftp test so I am in the decision making phase of which platform to invest my time in.

  • Hey Brian how are you man? can't believe you just mentioned me as I was watching haha, anyway just a quick update,i'm 5 days into the 4 weeks and really loving the workouts,i set my FTP to 240 which is 10w above my real world FTP but i'm getting through the efforts with just a tiny bit left in the tank so I reckon it's pretty close to where I am power wise ,i frickin hate those sprints those man they are killers….When this is over I will have a look into this Rouvy it looks good….. Speak to you again next week buddy and I will keep training right through the xmas period, weather is pretty awful here in Manchester England so riding in doors is a real bonus. Stay cool dude 🙂

  • Dude, try 'Fulgaz'… It has heaps of ride options and 4k video on Apple TV is unbelievable…….no 'Game' graphics but very addictive.

  • Evidently you can design your own route and Rouvy will use Google Street View to put you on that road. I am anticipating a move to Mexico and would love to tour certain areas as my workout rides now, before I go.

I had the feeling, after looking into doing it, that you’ll need a comp sci Degree to figure that out. If someone knows better help us out with a video.

  • I just got my first smart trainer and was trying to decide between Rouvy and Zwift. Would love to hear your experience with their workouts (like the FTP booster you mentioned). The timing of your vid was perfect!

  • Thanks for that, looks like an improvement on zwift for me personally. Fewer people and more route choices. Downloading now.

  • I don't know… the mix of live video with game graphics looks questionable to me. 🙂 I should probably give it a try, I have a Magnus trainer, so that might have come with some free Rouvy.

  • Oh yeah, love the Ridley. That was the first bike that really grabbed my attention when I started cycling 2 years ago

  • Keep me coming bud. They don’t have to be perfect in editing , just have decent and consistent content. Quality of video is not the main reason for tuning in. We like to see what’s out there and who’s doing what. We all have jobs and appreciate the time it takes for you to put these together.

  • Have you tried building custom workouts in Zwift? If you build a BrianDavisRaces one, we'll try it – (but i haven't successfully downloaded a workout and imported it into zwfit yet)
