Today, on our 2019 Cadillac XT5, we’re gonna be doing a test fit on the Thule Motion XT rooftop cargo box. I’ve already got it in place, just to give you a good idea what it looks like. I’ve got the silver installed, but it’s also available in black. So if that’s you’re interested in, see etrailer.com.Now, this rooftop box is gonna allow us to free up space inside of our vehicle for more gear or passengers and pets. If you can see, we’re able to store all that gear inside of our box, without any issues.This is better than having to use a cargo carrier or a hitch or haul around a trailer. Everything is up on top of our roof, within easy reach, and we’re always gonna have it with us.Now, very similar to a roof basket, except for this is gonna offer us more security and protection from the elements.Now, its dimensions are 91 and a half inches long, by 37 and a half inches wide, and it’s about 18 inches tall.
So again, more than enough room to carry our gear.I’ve got it in place on my XT5, with my after market roof rack system. With where I have I it positioned, it’s not gonna interfere with my rear hatch.So, when placing it on your roof, you wanna be sure you’ve got it pushed far enough forward. You can see here how it’s got that tapered tail here so that’s gonna further help and prevent our rear hatch from coming in contact. So just keep this in mind when you go to put it in place.Let’s go ahead and open up the box.Now, it’ll open from either side, so that’s a nice feature. That way if you are parked on a busy street, where there’s traffic, you can access the opposite side without having to worry about that traffic.So these supports are gonna keep the lid open, that way we can easily load and unload our gear.
That’s a huge plus. The inside is made of . or the whole box, excuse me, is made of a durable ABS plastic, so it’s gonna withstand scratches and rock chips and things like that.Now, on the inside, it uses four power click quick-release clamps. What’s unique to these is that for one, they are removable. That way we can easily set our box in place on our roof rack without it causing it, preventing it, oh, excuse me, from preventing it from sliding on.
Sometimes, with other roof boxes, the clamps get bound up in the rails and makes if difficult, excuse me. It makes if difficult to slide it on in place.But with these clamps, what’s unique about them is they do exactly what they’re called. So when that large knob tightens up that clamp, whenever it’s properly torqued down, it will click, and that’s how we know when to stop.They easily slip down through, you can see here. Be sure that that clamp goes around the cross bar and then we can tighten that up.Again, you turn the knob, listen for the click, and then it’s nice and secure and we don’t have to worry about it coming loose.When our gear is all loaded up, we can pull on the rope to help us pull the lid close, and listen for the click.Now, we’ve got a little indicator here that let’s us know what it’s closed properly. We can not remove the keys or lock it up when this happens.
So it’s a nice little safety feature there.We’ll pull it down, until that disappears, and then we can lock it up.So not a bad box to have with us. Again, it’s gonna be able to . it’s gonna let us store most of our gear up on our roof.But that’s gonna complete our test fit of the Thule Motion XT rooftop cargo box on our 2019 Cadillac XT5.
